BYU Cougars and PDL So, now that the Blitzz are gone, does that make the BYU Cougars Utah’s defacto lower division team? Anyone here plan on attending the matches?
The rough thing about PDL is that they have back-to-back matches pretty much every weekend Fri.-Sat. That is difficult and leads to injuries. In July, BYU has a stretch of 3 matches in 3 days. That’s masochistically absurd! Their season is only 2 months long with 18 matches (10 home, 8 away). However, the first four of these matches are Open Cup matches. Only one of their home matches conflicts with a Real home match. http://www.uslsoccer.com/docs/home/2005%20pdl%20schedule.pdf

If I'm in town visiting the in-laws on any of those weekends, odds are I'll be there.

I love watching BYU, and it's my dream to play there in college. I come to all of the games that I can get my parents to take me to.

Sorry. I love soccer, but I draw the line at cheering for any team from BYU. 😉 That said, I applaud the program they have there. It's good for the game in the state of Utah. As it is around the country now, men's collegiate teams are far too rare.

I thought it was pretty funny when USL came out with BYU's schedule the day after Costa Rica was announced. They have BYU playing a home game the same night as the WCQ. I emailed them and they told me they didn't know about the WCQ in SLC. LOL

Thanks, but I was well aware of their status. I've followed the USL for years, so I know the setup. Doesn't change a thing. The Y is the Y. 😉

Since we're drawing lines in the sand I should make myself clear. I'm a sucker for soccer. I'll be attending the games for the soccer as a neutral supporter of the game itself.
I did this last year whenever at my in-laws and there was a game, and it's funny to watch the people around you when you cheer when the other team does something cool, everybody looks at you like you're from another planet. And I believe I saw you there Arelius. You were the one jumpiing and singing through most of the match. You gained my respect for your efforts to get the crowd into it. For those who haven't experienced it, the PDL is nice soccer to watch. It seems to be where MLS draws from when they need young talent in a tight situation, example being Troy Perkins who started for DC United last year for several games. He was pulled up from a PDL team (Cape Cod, I believe).

I yelled myself hoarse in several matches; probably ‘cause I was the only one making any noise. It takes it outta ya doing it on yer own. Actually in the supplemental draft, 31 PDLers were drafted to MLS teams, including one to Real Salt Lake. A bonus prize to the person who can name the PDLer that Real drafted. Being from Utah County, I have watched BYU men's (and women's soccer) more than I have seen the Blitzz play. I have sent my kids to BYU summer soccer camp and have gotten to know the coaches and players at BYU. I think that the BYU soccer programs are a class act--compared to other BYU sports both on an off the field. 😉
I am glad that Utah has soccer at virtually every level from community recreation leagues to statewide competetion leagues to ODP to BYU's PDL and now to ReAL's MLS and what do you know--even World Cup Soccer! This provides soccer opportunies for everyone at whatever level they want. With these many soccer options I can probably get my fill of soccer.
