I was with Sam's army yesterday at the USA/England match...proudly wearing my Loyalists t-shirt which brought me many, many compliments. I was even on the big screen twice and got to show off my shirt! I heard I had a full-frame shot of me on ESPN with the shirt clearly visible at about 78 minutes, but I haven't watched the tape yet. I was lucky to get front row at the bottom left hand corner of the flag so that when the flag went out I could still see the game.

Okay...on to the reason for posting....

Guys, the chanting situation yesterday was pretty weak compared to the RSL home opener (the only RSL home game I have been to). Before the game we had good fun with "we've got dentists" and "its called football" chants. But during the game the creativity level was NOT there. It was all "USA" and "Estados Unidos", Ooh ooh ooh" and that is about it. The "You Suck" chants at James were excellent though. No "Same Old England, always cheating/diving" (or any of the many permutations),no there's only one...(not even for Drew Carey who walked right past our section pre-match, and me and some buddies tried to get it going) no "all we are saying", etc. One drum was there only. Worst Sam's Army crowd chant-wise I have seen yet, and I don't know why the SLC match would be better.

I think the Loyalists are going to REALLY have to show up to this match. A few rules I think we should keep in mind: the biggest being KEEP SINGING! Sing a song until action on the field dictates a change, then sing a different song untill we change to another. We had periods of 3,4,5 minutes yesterday that were silent! Loyalists are good at getting the drums all together, make sure we do that again, and lets sing the whole game, nonstop. Actually for both games. The Loyalists own Rice-Eccles, and Sam's Army will jump in when we get something going, but we can't assume that they will do it right on their own.

Also, the crowd at the Barnburners tailgate was huge. Be prepared for a big crowd at our tailgate this week-end. I think that this might be a good chance to reherse some chants too.

A friend from another forum made me an Old Ska baseball hat. I may wear it this week-end at the game so people know who I am.

Okay, there a few chants that I think we definately need to have ready to go next week...not just for our teams, but to show that the Loyalists rock to all the Sam's Army types that are coming.

Here is my "Must have" list:
Unique to RSL:
-Ellinger's Army
-Moon River (for when Andy Williams does something amazing, one line only "Moon River, Wider than a mile, I'm crossing you in style some day")
-Dipsy Bumaya (like the 'Ali Bumaya" chant)
-The Sponge Bob Squarepants song mentioned here:http://www.realsaltlake.org/forums/showthread.php?t=149&page=1 is seriously the most brilliant thing I have EVER seen!

Unique to USA/Costa Rica
-Habemus Papam (when Pope does something excellent, we DO have the Pope after all!)
-You got the best coffee in the world (sung to the tune of "he's got the whole world in his hands". It is kind of tradition to sing "you got the biggest X" to our opponents. How hilarious would it be to sing about coffee in Utah?)

Regulars:
-Welcome to Rice-Eccles boys
-Same old...
-How high/wide do you want the goal
-I'm blind/I'm deaf (or a rope/a tree)
-there's only one...(whoever does something excellent)
-You Suck (a-hole optional) on goal kicks
And my proposal for a new when we lose the ball (or are about to):
-Swiper No Swiping!

Taps at line-up announcements of other team is a must!
Also, I vote NO "clap your hands" chants.

If we had this in our arsenal on Saturday, we would be golden.

Hopefully, we will have on our side what I like to call "Sam's Army's Irregulars".

That is to say, supporters of Latin American national teams that will support the US, as long as we are not playing against their homeland.

At previous US games, these Sam's Army Irregulars have always gotten a kick out of :

"Estados Unidos
Jamas Sera Vencido"

It's an old UFW chant, or maybe it's even older than that. There's probably an audio file of it somewhere.

(It means, "The United States will never be defeated.")

I don't have a vote since I won't be at any of these games, but these all look good.

Except . . . I've always considered the "you suck" chant on goal kicks to be just plain stupid and low class. It sounds so low rent college to me. That one could go from the list and we'd all be better off for it.

On heckling refs, it's absolutely part of the game. But please, for everyone, before you go after a ref for a bad call go to FIFA.com and download the latest Laws of the Game. Read, know and live them.

Yes, I've been a soccer official, so I'd prefer to hear informed and clever heckling.

My guess is that most people won't be reviewing the FIFA LotG after a perceived bad call. It's easier (and funner) to raz the ref anyway regardless if he's right or not. 🙂

I think that as a rabid and vocal fan, I would feel more satisfied if the ref didn't appreciate any of my cheers. I would rather him think "man what a jerk" than "wow, what an educated and wise fan." 😉
Anyway, good comments. Since I am a relative newcomer to the beautiful game, it's always good to hear from guys who know the game better than I. 🙂

Everyone remembers a clever heckler. We will have to come up with something. What else should we chant during corners? Any suggestions?

Well, I can promise that Sam's will do the "you suck" thing over and over and over and over. It is pretty much standard now, so I don't know how you can get around it. The only hope would be to do something else instead..."dodgy keeper" maybe?

On refs, hmmmm, how about "the ref is german"? Another common anti-ref chant is "who is the wanker with the flag" but I am guessing that one is too low class for you as well? There is also "go home and beat your wife!"
