If they want to make RES more "soccer friendly" by adding grass and moving the walls back, then I think that might be a better and cheaper alternative to having our own stadium. I wonder what Uncle Dave thinks. The advantage to having our own soccer specific stadium is that it can be used for things besides RSL games and RSL has more control over scheduling.

We have to move. The legislators don't understand this. Was the senator Stevenson? I didn't read the article.

I think any plan that does not involve tax-payer funding needs to be carefully considered before any plan that does include tax-payer funding. Especially in a place like Utah.

Well said! Also don't forget that the reason MLS has their season scheduled the way it is now (more or less opposite of international/european leagues) is because MLS teams share stadiums with other organizations, be them pro or collegiate. If they ever wanted their season to coincide with the international/european leagues, ALL teams would have to have stadiums free from scheduling conflicts. In order to be free from scheduling conflicts and have more control of stadium scheduling it only makes sense to build a SSS.

A better alternative than having our own stadium? Really? Could you explain how? I am sickened by the fact that the proposals for us getting our own stadium seem to be losing steam. I really hate to see the remnants of pointyball lines on a soccer field. The gigantic stadium w/ thousands of empty seats looks horrible on TV. Can we forget the sparse crowd comment about the LA game? Staying in RES is a BAD idea in my mind. How exactly would they work putting down grass? Would the U decide to permanently dump the field turf? So they invest a bunch of money into the ability to remove a few rows of seats. What happens when soccer leaves for our own stadium? This doesn't seem like a very useful feature in the stadium to me. I am sorry, but key points of the creative proposal seem a bit silly. Not to mention the fact that the it seems like a slipperly slope that the U doesn't want to go down by opening the stadium to beer sales for soccer. Can you imagine the uproar from the pointyball fans? The atmosphere of a soccer specific stadium would be leaps and bounds above a "renovated" RES. I always thought that part of the deal w/ MLS when the team came to SLC was that we would have a stadium in 3 years. Am I wrong? Was just a hope from MLS and not a promise by Uncle Dave? With this type of banter going on I would take a soccer specific stadium wherever it can get built. I don't know for sure, but it seems like the soccer haters are winning the stadium battle right now. Have any of these folks saying RES will work ever been to a game and RES and then a game at a decent venue like the HDC?

I don't know that the U. would be all excited about such a proposal, either.
The FieldTurf isn't that old, the stadium just got renovated, and it would be on the university's head to deal with all the IDing and serving issues that come with beer. It seems like a colossal waste of money, especially when you consider that it took YEARS to get the Marriott Library renovation passed.

Look at your next property tax statement. You will feel better. Or if you want to feel even better, look at the bulletin board at work. Notice how there are no Plant Closing notices caused by your employer moving to Wyoming, Nevada, California, Jalisco or Guangdong to get away from our higher property taxes. Then you will feel better yet.
