You're making this statement from an American point of view. The only way most european fans would miss a game was if they were in body bags or this happened to them :velho: . The Italian league (Serie A) plays straight threw from September - May and in northern Italy winters can get pretty frigid.

JLL, where in that article does it tie property taxes into businesses leaving and then into poverty? Just curious. Connecticut, RI, and Massachussetts have some of the highest property taxes in the nation, yet businesses aren't competing to be the first ones to leave, and poverty levels are among the lowest. I'm thinking there's more to it than just taxes (hint: the article mentioned "social circumstances")
The "higher property taxes = worse economy" argument seems way too linear and absolute. And remember, only the Sith (and politicians) deal in absolutes. In any case, I don't think the constituents are going to approve much in the way of financial aid for Mr. Checketts, and I respect that. It does make more sense to me that the owner of this business venture (RSL) come up with the cash himself. But like Aero said, there are so many taxpayer-aided projects that already exist that I don't care for, that it would be justice (in my eyes) to finally pay taxes for something that *I* want. Self-centered? Maybe. Do I care? Not so much.

To be fair, it's rare to see packed stadiums in Serie A except for derby matches and games with relegation or chanpionship ramifications. Even so, the weather doesn't seem to matter much to fans in Europe. Not unlike Green Bay Packer fans, who prove that Americans are capable of showing up for cold weather games. __________________

The connection is between Cleveland's economic problems and its stadiums is tenuous at best. But we keep hearing about publicly-funded pro sports facilities cause economic development. So Cleveland should be richer than Hong Kong & Olympus Cove put together, right? And Columbus, right down the 71, with privately funded soccer & hockey facilities should be mired in poverty, right? Nope. It's doing OK. Much better Cincinnati, with its new yards for the Reds & Bengals. Stupid Massachusetts & Connecticut spend their property tax money on dumb things like education. Morons. (I think that the Celtics/Bruins' Arena may have received a little Welfare.)

👎 Anyway, the fact is that beer is not the main issue, and grass is not the main issue. The main issue is a SSStadium. It is based on financial success for the team. These suggestions are just pitiful. They show a complete lack of understanding and even less sympathy with the issues.

My impressions from this as soon I read the article this morning while having my morning wake-up coffee was that if the good representative from Draper thinks the biggest concern of soccer fans is being able to enjoy a cold beer at the match, he really has no idea why we want a SSS. (Not to downplay the importance of enjoying a quality refreshing beverage at the match of course, but there are many other reasons while a SSS is vital to the continued success of the franchise.)

County voters wouldn't fund the arts either, until the zoo and recreation facilities were thrown in.

This whole beer sales bit is a PR program by the Utah Taxpayers Association which has as it President Howard A. Stephenson to discredit the idea of a Soccer Specific Stadium. See what theyare saying at utahtaxpayers.org and check out the 6 page soccer stadium pdf link.
Shame on the Trib for letting a PR spout off get in the paper as news! (see my recent posts in the Ultimate Stadium thread at Big Soccer) Modification of RES to better host soccer is without a valid finacial or technical basis. However politicians (who decide what money the U gets would like someone else to pay the remaining $22,000,000 for the Olympic (read football team benifitting) renovations. Suprise! a healthy Real could do it if they outlaw all options for a SSS. Also the Athletic Department is looking to eventually replace the South End structure. Reasons include additional seating and BCS equivalent dressing rooms etc. You must be impressive to those recruits or they will go to BYU or Nebraska or Ohio or...... So why not get a captive Co-Tenat to pay?
