Dave dropped out because of his injuries. He was "only" a domestique for CSC, anyway (but a hell of a time trialist for a domestique, n'est-ce pas?). Hard to do your job with no skin on your left side.

And I agree about Lance in yellow on Wednesday. If he can't win the climbs to Courchevel and the immortal Cols de Madeline/Telegraphe/Galibier, well, he doesn't deserve the yellow. He's got to watch out for Basso and Vinokourov, though, and maybe remind the rest of his team why they're getting paid. He really can't afford another breakdown there. (My two cents. I'll stop now.)

The Discovery team did a much better job Sunday staying up with Lance. Saturday was a bit scary with Lance totally on his own at the end. A lot of things could have gone wrong (flat tire, out of water, crash) at the worst possible time on that day that would have left lance very vulnerable.

Tomorrow the Alps start and things get fun!

Does anyone else wonder if Discovery set this up to give the other teams confidence, only to shatter it on Tuesday?

Probably not, but it did cross my mind on Saturday when I saw Lance on his own.

That is the sort of thing Lance has been known to do.
Once he destroys the field this week they can say it, whether it's true or not 🙂

One reader wrote in with the suggestion that the Tour awards a jersey to the best-placed mullet in the Tour, by the way. Sponsored by Lynard Skynard, the "Freebird" jersey would be awarded using a complex formula based on the relationship of hair in front and back and overall time.

Lance should be back in yellow.

And he is. Today was everything we expected--order has been restored.

Well, mostly. I think Nike's gonna have a hard time unloading those "No Gifts" T-shirts if Lance can't win a stage....

Ha. But the Disco Boys apparently are back. Perfect example of how to get your team leader to the top of a mountain stage. Hincapie's the man, man!

It was too bad he couln't finish off the stage with a win, but yellow is more important.

He'll get his stage win -- I'm thinking he'll win the time trial, if not one of the remaining mountain stages...
