I think we need to get rid of the bleachers and leave very few seats (if any) throughout the stadium. Far too many people at the games have the I'm-going-to-sit-here-and-watch-a-bunch-of-guys-kick-a-ball-around mentality.
I went with a big group of people (of all ages) this weekend, and I was just depressed by nearly all of them. My best friend's wife was complaining about the sun and the headache it was giving her (poor girl) and she told me to save my voice for the other half. I told her to get off her duff and make some noise. My wife and I, we left our North Goal seats at half time after being practically the only ones yelling with the rowdy corner fans. We went to join the real fans. My best friend's buddy came with us and we all had a great time. I think every fan needs to experience the E32 section. I remember the 2-1 victory over the Galaxy in May. That was my second game at Rice-Eccles and luckily I had purchased tickets in the 3rd row of E32. I've never had so much fun in my life, learning the chants, insulting the ref and the Lax. Too bad we were so far away from Eddie Pope's flying karate kick goal... During the home opener (I was pretty clueless as to what to expect), we were sitting in the 10th row at about the 20 yard line and people kept telling me to sit down during the last 5 minutes of the game. I couldn't believe it (and it really pissed me off, too)! I think the supporters of RSL, inasmuch as they are located in or near E32, are GREAT! I think we are definitely developing our team and our venue. what I really think we need is to find ways to generate more energy outside of section E32. It was really getting on my nerves how much buzz would go through the stadium on Saturday whenever Chivas was getting close to goal. We need that same awareness and attitude for our team! Any ideas? :sly: --Geoff :dontgetit

While I agree that fan participation throughout the stadium would be great, I don't agree with the idea that everyone should have to stand, chant, and sing the entire game. If you are in a supporters section, of course you would, but for a lot of people that isn't how they enjoy the game. I've never been a stand up, scream, and cheer kind of person, but that doesn't mean that I'm not into the game and I'd never tell someone who does do that kind of thing to stop what they are doing. During the game on Saturday, I was pretty quiet except for when the goals were scored or if we'd just had a really good chance. I don't yell at players or officials because I just don't see the point. If I were to go to the Loyalists section, of course I'd be more vocal, but that is the expectation there.
As far as the awareness of most of the RSL fans throughout the stadium, I don't think you're giving them enough credit. Yeah, I'll admit there are some people who don't have a clue, but I agree with what I've read and heard time and time again that the crowds for the games so far have been pretty knowledgable. I've been to games in a lot of other stadiums, including quite a few games in San Jose, DC, and LA (Rose Bowl and HDC), and in none of those places did I sense the same level of understanding that I sensed in Salt Lake, which is amazing considering the team is in its first season. I will add to this that I think you'll be amazed when the new stadium is built just how much it helps the atmosphere to have a properly sized stadium built specifically for soccer. That's especially true if they are planning on having a roof because the sound gets reverberated back down to the field.

Personally, I enjoy making fun of the other team (Jesus and Lobster Hands, still laughing about those) and discussing what's going on in the game (like talking about how we could get more width in our attack or whatever) with whoever I'm sitting with. Does this mean I'm an old fogey? Most likely. Does this mean I'm a plastic fan? No.

I took my dad to the LA game on June 22nd with some buddies for my bachelor party. My dad had never been to a game before, but had watched a few RSL games on TV with me before, so he'd had a little education. He made me so proud! He was cursing the ref up and down the field within 5 minutes. He was on his feet. He got this huge smile on his face and screamed like a madman when Jamie scored his goal. He was even jumping. I almost cried. I wish the entire crowd could be like him! He hasn't gone since, but he wants to! They don't have to be negative like me and the loyalists/RCB/jesters and insult each and every player and ref and opposing fan on the field. That's just our rabies flaring up. It's an integral part of our chemical makeup by now (we're freaking football vampires or zombies or something), and that's not necessarily a good thing, especially when a Costa Rican woman asks your fiancee to shut you up. (<-- Happened to my fiancee on June 4th. I guess I screamed MARIC** one too many times at those dirty diving Costa Rican bastards, oh and the refs too...) But I sure do enjoy getting all worked up. In some stadiums throughout the world sitting is not an option. I don't think we should get rid of all the seats. Just more of them. I think the sitters can have the nosebleed section. Leave the nitty-gritty to the rabid fans. Oh, and the chants should be stadium wide. Seriously. At least the clean ones...hehehe you guys in the RCB are ROUGH! There's something special about hearing the "hinchada" (the entire stadium) of a South American team (BOCAAAAAAAA!!!) or an English team break into song for their team. I have only heard it on TV, and it was awe-inspiring. Does this mean we should rush the field in the 80th minute because our team is losing or throw bottles, flares, or even LIGHTERS ( ) at opposing goalkeepers or participate in any semi or truly violent hooliganism? No. We're the loyalists, jesters, and rogues. We're not the hooligans. The chants should be like the 7th-inning stretch, only ALL GAME. The chants should be like the rebel charge, which is actually played at some MLS games (I think that is super stooooopid hehe). EVERYONE should know them, and EVERYONE who wants to should participate. I think we need to seed the stands with pockets of loyal (and not bashful) fans to help stir up a little fire in the hearts of all attending the games. I KNOW!!! WE NEED THE SERVICES OF THE JUMBOTRON!!! OR at least the little screen underneath it! We need to have someone coordinating with the people running that board! With the simple "ReAL, SALT LAKE!" chants it would work out well. Anyone tried this before??? --Geoff :dontgetit
