Yeah, that is exactly my thought!!! Clint was a major instigator of a very ugly incident. After being carded he didn't immediately leave the field and instead confronted Romo. That probably deserves some punishment. My problem with the ruling is that Romo should get nearly as harsh of a punishment for also being an instigator and then for the dropping to the ground w/out being touched incident. The punishment for Arias may seem a bit soft, but I guess I can go with that. Sadly, if you have a bad boy reputation the league comes down more harshly on you. There is certainly precedent around sports for that. I do hope that Clint can get a game shaved off that suspension though via appeal. I also hope that a bit of the commentary that if Clint wants to see more time with the USMNT that he will bring the emotions in check a bit better. In general I like Clint's feisty attitude, but I wish he wouldn't let it get out of control to the point of hurting his team...

I’m trying not to be too upset about the situation. One thing I’ve seen in many sports through the years is one player does something to a second player who retaliates and the referee (umpire, judge, whatever) sees only the retaliation with the result being the second player is severely punished and the first player gets away with it.
It’s understandable that in the heat of the moment with all hell breaking loose last Saturday, that the official at the time made the calls the way he did, and I felt at the time he simply wanted to find one player on each team to eject to balance things out. But the displinary committee has presumably had time to fully review tapes and make their decision. My perception is the league is sending a message that had not Clint reacted the way he did, the fight might not have occurred. I would agree that Clint could simply have not reacted when struck by the ball kicked by Romo and the melee would not have occurred. But then again, if Romo doesn’t kick the ball at Clint WHILE PLAY WAS STOPPED, none of it happens either. Given that Romo continued to be an agressor and made his ridiculous dive pretending he had been struck by a low blow, it’s hard to believe all he gets is a $250 fine. I also think that in general, Chivas was the aggressor during the altercation and was largely responsible for the events that occurred but RSL is going to bear the far greater punishment. Too bad Chivas doesn’t visit Rice-Eccles again this year so we can’t bring out the ‘welcome wagon’ for them. Another thing I have a big problem with is that the offical several times earlier in the game ignored beligerant and dirty play by Chivas players. Had he shown a few deserved cards in the early minutes of the match and taken charge of the match as any competant official should, this whole mess would never have happened. He failed to control the game, all hell broke loose, and Clint and RSL pay the price.

Lets break this down, and show why so many of us are upset (besides the fact that one of our favorite players is out 3 games,..which BTW is vs. Revs, KC and Quakes).
Mathis was sanctioned for #1 striking at an opponent in the face When did this happen? Did I miss something? #2 failure to leave the field promptly after being ejected Ok, that maybe true. But from the video I never saw a Red card go up, so why would Mathis run back to the bench at any point? #3 verbally confronting the referee True, but if thats even a yellow card offense in pro soccer, shouldn't Wayne Rooney be out for about half of the EPL season. #4 kicking a soccer ball into the stands Yes he did that. #5 inappropriate physical confrontation with Romo prior to the leaving the field :signexcus Inappropriate is walking over to Romo and Romo dropping for no reason? All in all, Mathis messed up. But these CHARGES are overblown.

How can we let the MLS FO know we do not appreciate this farce? Anyone have any email or phone contacts? Any addresses?
I can see why Mathis got what he got. I don't agree, but I can see the logic. I always thought he deserved the red. Arias deserves a more significant monetary fine. He intentionally tried to (or did?) injure a player. What I can't understand is why Romo didn't get anything. As the first and last instigator, he should have gotten his yellow upgraded to a red. Oh, and a $10,000.00 fine for being a dirty diving bastard. --Geoff :dontgetit

On the MLS recap show that night on Fox Soccer Channel, they showed a clip of the referee showing Clint the red at which point he almost immediately kicked the ball into stands in disgust.
