Grrr.. some fans So here it is. I sit in the North goal and am surrounded by several fellow season ticket holders. It really irks me to hear people loudly bashing on ReAL all night. I mean, the WHOLE 90 MINUTES! What's the point? I understand frustration (sometimes the games make me cry, I admit it) But what is the point of spending $200 and up to come to every game and b!tch? I say Booooo to all the buzzkills around me!

I second that!! When DadOf8 took me, my parents, and 6 of our 8 kids, the same thing happened. Mom, the kids and I sat over on the east side for about 2 seconds, then we had to move. The heat was KILLING us!! Anyhow, we moved over to the west side of the stadium in the shade. The people that sat almost directly behind us kept bashing on ReAl. Yelling moves they would've made, etc. I should've turned around and said "If you think you can do any better....get out on that field and do it!!" Dang, those players are only human and make mistakes too. GIVE THEM A BREAK!! I'd like to see any of the hecklers do a better job in that heat.

All season long I've heard a lot of Mathis bashing in the stands. I just ignore it, but my buddy Paul is a little more vocal than I am and got into it with someone that said Mathis hasn't done anything. This is pretty typical of Utah. I've heard it at BYU football games and Utah Jazz games too. BYU fans tend to either hate the starting QB or the coach. Utah Jazz fans seem to hate Ostertag and I've even heard some bash Jerry Sloan (HERESY!).
On a funny side note. I attended a Jazz playoff game (do you remember when the Jazz used to make the playoffs?) vs. Portland and my brother and I were verbally assaulting Danny Ainge. Some lady in front of me (probably a BYU alum) got pretty upset with it and turned around and told us to knock it off. Hey, if he plays for the enemy it's open season. Besides, I'm a U of U fan, so what do I care if Ainge gets harrassed?

I think maybe we should start talking back to fans that are down on their team. If we hear something negative maybe we should turn around and ask, "Just exactly who are you rooting for?" or maybe, "Hey, I didn't think I was in the Home Depot Center [insert stadium here], I thought I was in Rice-Eccles." Usually I reserve my frustration for the opposition and don't waste it on people in my section that don't know the difference between offside and offsides.

OK, I'll be the odd one out in this argument ... ermmm ... when I sit in the stands I am the first to say 'that was a dumb ball, what a dreadful pass ..' etc etc etc. I don't have a problem with it, now if you're shouting against your team then hey I agree, there is no place for that; but to express frustration about bad plays that your team makes is perfectly normal and acceptable. Everyone has there own opinions (including the coachng staff I am sure - that's how teams get picked) on different players and their capabilities or effort levels. There are some players I might think are a waste of a roster space, some who have absolutely not played to the levels that they are capable of, now I wouldn't necessarily shout out from the roof tops who I think they are, in fact I would pretty much keep that to myself - who knows maybe I am wrong; however I am sure that I am critical of them sometimes and that doesn't make me a bad fan. On the contrary it is exactly what makes me a fan, I have a love for a team that may let me as a fan down sometimes, likewise, I may let the team down with my poor attitude on occassion (or perhaps by throwing stupid things on to the pitch that may njure me or slow down my game and indeed stifle my playing ability when i get tangled up in paper rolls that didn't fully unravel). It is exactly that relationship that makes the relationship stronger because I keep coming back to support the team and it keeps playing in front of me despite my frustrations sometimes being overheard or the stupid other things that I might do as a fan (aherm). Who knows maybe sometimes that helps? Maybe not?
I guess all I am saying is that they might think the same of you? To them a fan is someone who loves their team no matter what the result, no matter who plays badly they show up week after week to support the team, they voice their opinions and they still come back and they scream just as loud as the next person when the team score. o them maybe you aren't what they would call a fan, you obviously both have differing opinions on the definition, the great thing about sports is that your definition of a fan is just right ... for you. Now don't misunderstand me, there is no place for foul or abusive language, this is a family sport. But we as fans are individuals. Every fan is different, the minute we only hear ... baaaaa baaaaa baaaaa from the stands is the day soccer ceases to be a game followed by unique fans that add that little spice, the differences and the passion to a stadium. Just presenting an alternate view ... take what you like and leave the rest. Last edited by Scholesy : 08-21-2005 at 10:44 PM. Reason: Spelling mistake

We may be talking about different things. My sense is that we're talking about spectators who do nothing but whine the whole game.
I would expect that those who have knowledge of the game find plenty to critique. If you know what's supposed to happen, then you're more aware of when it doesn't (i.e.: Nolly's position on Chung's goal). Spectators can whine the whole game--no law against that. But the incessant negativity without any corresponding support for the team is bound to annoy the rest of us, especially if they haven't a clue what they're talking about. And my experience is that those who rag on the team the most rarely know what they're talking about. That's a good deal different than occasionally noting when the lads are playing poorly. Of course, in my opinion, if the lads are playing poorly, that would be our cue to cheer them on even louder. __________________
