First off, nice avatar Jake.
Secondly, if they raise taxes in SL County, it won't effect ppl in the UC.

I read that article in Deseret News and liked it for the most part but one thing stuck out that I really found hard to swallow... So I am not going to leave it alone... I have taken it onboard as my job description, and I am totally getting behind the Downtown site with a re-newed passion... all because of the following statement!

Quote:
Murray has its own proposal for MLS stadium on a 100-acre site near 4500 South and I-15. That site would include housing, a Target store and a Lowe's home-improvement store and would have space for practice fields and other soccer-related facilities.

Holy cow Murray wants to build another strip mall...! Does the world not have enough strip malls?
A strip mall will suck the atmosphere completely out of the stadium... you might as well build a Wal-Mart while you are at it!

I have to admit that 100 acres and the inclusion of practice fields is sweet! However, the description says 'space for practice fields' it does not say they will be initially built.
Another point that is not mentioned is a large parking area (for a stadium, Lowe's and a Target) will take up a large part of that 100 acres.

A Parking Tower will be built next to the downtown stadium site(don't know where the bridge idea comes from) and to my knowlege is included in the stadium price (I could be wrong but its inclusion in the total cost would make sense) Fans in a parking tower would be much closer to the stadium. Rather than the Murray site where they would be out looking for their lost car in the north 40...

Fans would leave a downtown stadium and would not just jump in their cars and drive away as would be most likely the case in Murray, but would be just a short walk from the heart of downtown, with Hotels, restaraunts, cinemas malls and Temple Square.
What would you have in Murray? oh yeah, Lowe's and Target! Yeeeeeeah! 😲

I can't remember ever being at a soccer game and when it was over thought oh goody! I can go buy a toilet for my house while I am here!
These types of stores have as much to do with soccer as cross-training shoes to a man with no feet!

A short walk? Have you ever walked around downtown SLC. We've got the biggest frickin blocks in the world. This is the problem faced by downtown. Even if you get people downtown, it is so far to walk to get anywhere else, many people cannot do it. The 7 blocks to Temple square from the stadium would take 20 minutes to walk and is close to a mile away.

However, TRAX would probably extend the free ride zone to the new stadium, so jumping on TRAX, which comes every 15 minutes, to ride into downtown, would work.

With this said, I do agree that it is more likely that people will want to stay downtown after, or come in early, for other entertainments, as opposed to Murray, where people will leave post-haste...unless there is a soccer bar within walking distance, of course. 😉

Yeah I work downtown and walk all over down here on a daily basis... TRAX is available to those that don't want to walk! In fact Mayor Rocky has promised a stadium specific TRAX stop!

:D

You're soooo getting rep for that one... literally laughing aloud, much to the amusement of the other cubicle-dwellers around me.

Correct me if I am wrong, but has there ever been a a pro-soccer, pro-MLS, pro-SSS mayor than Rocky? I mean he is quoted in every article about the SSS. And the articles aren't quoting off the cuff comments, Andersen is basically a cheerleader for Checketts and RSL.

Make sure you guys re-elect him when the time comes, if for nothing else, for helping RSL.

Not to mention the fact that he called Cleatus to get him to come! I'm going to vote for him and I don't even live in SLC! :D

It rather sounds like it is going to be in SLC. While I am still mainly in favor of the Murray site, I like that location, and especially I like the idea of the parking tower, right next door. That would eliminate my most important issue.

But I also agree that walking from there to any of the entertainment, and food establishments, as mentioned in all the SLC arguements, would be rather impractical.

On the other hand, new ones would open up near the stadium, I'm sure. A venue like that will draw restaraunts to it. That is in fact the reason Mayor Andersen gives for wanting it there; to draw other businesses to that part of town and help revitalize it.

So, I don't know that the long walk would actually be an issue for long. It might even be superceded before the stadium is completed.

Stores like Lowe's aren't exactly strip mall quality. They usually stand alone with a ton of parking all around them. And I doubt they'd be butted up against the side of the stadium exactly!

I'll be excited to see the stadium built, wherever it is, but I'm still partial to Murray. I don't see why people get all worked up over this, though... I mean, the decision isn't in our hands. We have no control over it. We'll enjoy it wherever it's built. Stop wasting emotional energy stressing about it! Just be excited for the announcement! It's like when we were all debating about the team name. People were so worked up over the possibility of the name Real Salt Lake, but as soon as it was announced, we backed it up 110%! It didn't matter that we preferred something else to begin with! It'll be the same with the stadium. Downtown? Great. Murray? Great. At least we won't have pointy ball lines across the field after it's built!

Okay, I'm done ranting. But seriously--I have total faith in the powers that be to make an excellent decision on this. Once they announce where it'll be located, I won't question it for a moment. I'll just be excited if the funding happens and things turn out.

Viva Real Salt Lake!
