That's why I was suprised to not see West Valley City in the mix. It's not so much that the stadium itself is likely to do much directly. Afterall, the players won't all be living in Sandy because of this. And what will it bring for jobs? 20 people in the FO? Maybe help get another resteraunt or four going? Sure, those are nice. And even more so when it questionable exactly how much the city itself will end up chipping in. Sandy sees this as a way to make them a focal point in the region. No, it's not likely to become known as the Salt Lake City / Sandy metropolitan area anytime soon. But this is about making their young city, what many of us would call a suburb, have some things that we'd expect in a older, core city like Salt Lake City. __________________

I think one reason that we didn't see West Valley in the mess is because they learned their lesson when it comes to stadiums. West valley makes very little money off of their venue. And so I think they saw this one as something that they didnt want to get involved with. Also I dislike sandy. I think the economics wont favor them in this location. It will be a fad and everyone will want to go and check it out, but in the long run, they will learn that traffic is horrible and what not and choose to stay away. I also beleive that the gateway DT is a fad. Retail does 60-70% of its business in the months of back to school through christmas,(the colder months) and what does that developer(boyer) do they build an outdoor retail project. Anyways back to the thread. Sandy will never become an economic center. I can tell you that right now. They will be an assistant in helping other economic centers (SLC) grow, but never will they become a center themselves. And someone posted earlier about Franklin Covey Field not seeing any development around it. I can tell you why you didn't see any development around there. Back when the stadium was built (1994) it was the time the city was competing for the olympics. So the RDA didn't have any funds to spur devleopment around the stadium. I can tell you one thing. development is slowly starting to catch up with that area. just announced within the past month you have the........
Rowhaus Condominiums 1130 South West Temple 2000 Square Feet 3 Bedrooms 3 Baths Preconstruction pricing starting at $279,000 A very unique and modern, three story 24 unit townhouse style condominium; directly across from Jefferson Park with a 2 minute walk to TRAX and 2 blocks from the 900 South entrance to I-15 with mountain and city views. Just north of Franklin Covey field. and then you have the........ 288-unit apartment complex to be built on former Fetzer's site Miller Development Co., Murray, plans to break ground in September for a 288-unit apartment complex on approximately 10 acres at 1436 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City. The Utah Housing Corp. is preparing to issue $20 million in mortgage revenue bonds - about $14 million tax-exempt and $5 million taxable - to help finance the project, which will take about 18 months to construct. The Towne Gate Apartments will be built on property that for 60 years was home to Fetzer's Inc., a local architectural woodworking firm that moved to West Valley City last year. Jay Minnick, chief operations officer for Miller Development and CEO of subsidiary Millwood Companies, which will manage the apartment project, said Towne Gate Apartments' appearance will be urban in style, "similar to the feel of The Gateway. It will be a beautiful project. It's going to have incredible street-front presence." theres some other development going in around there, but havent found any links to them yet.

What the....you people are still complaining?
Pastorino was on 1280 at halftime, said he "got an earful" from Section 37. I'm confused. Is he a politician? Listen, those of you who feel that this is a poor economic decision for RSL are just wrong. You think Checketts pulled this decision out of his butt? You think that profit isn't important to him and that he just wanted to build a stadium as quickly as possible just to show it off to his friends? "Dude...check out my new place! It's totally rad!" I'm sure that he probably didn't think this one through. He'd probably be way better off listening to a minority of fans who think this is a terrible decision based on opinions formed by reading about political manoeuvers in newspapers and from talk radio. I bet that Davey is slapping himself watching the news tonight going "wait...a...minute....I could have built this downtown? I hadn't thought of that! I should have checked out that possibility!" My preference, all other factors not included, was downtown, based solely on location and surroundings. All other locations were not that far behind. I understand that some of you just absolutely HATE the Sandy location, although I don't understand WHY. But you do. And you want to voice your concerns, and are shocked that the general populace isn't protesting in rage. But there's a huge difference between sitting on one's hands, succumbing to a situation that you could influence, and accepting reality and deciding to move on. For those who believe that it's still conceivable to be in the first category, well...it's not.

There's something that makes me sick, but it's not the stadium being built in Sandy.

Absolutely agree. We're getting a first class stadium and I can't imagine how anyone could be upset with a site that allows us to build a complete sports facility. Dave Checketts made the best decision for his club. That's it. __________________

I bet 20 years down the road RSL will regret the decision of their "world-class stadium" in sandy. I'm willing to put my bet on this ending up being another E-center.

I bet 20 years down the road we have a world-class soccer mecca where teams, from little kids to nats, come to practice. I bet the practice fields, player living spaces, and terrific stadium become a commodity in this community/county/state and make a tremendous difference in the output of talent not only in Utah but in MLS and international competition (ie World Cup). I bet we look at it as a very fortuitous choice. IMHO.

We won't know. Only time will tell. I'm just basing my prediction off of research and findings on sports venues around the country. I think there needs to be more varied development around the stadium to keep it thriving. (clubs etc.
