WOW--I've become more impressed with the man every day. The goal he's put before them isn't an impossible one. If they truly are "professionals" and want to stay they'll keep themselves in shape.

Judging by some of the drills Coach Mellor has put LCFC through that are similar to drills I have seen RSL do, they are getting conditioning in their drill work.

As a coach, drills that take care of conditioning are much more valuable than running just to run.

This was probably better done via PM, but I am going to toss it out publicly b/c I wondered the same thing for a bit. Maybe others will benefit. This is my experience based on Comcast in the SLC. You can get GolTV from Comcast, but my understanding is that you must have digital cable to get it. It is a digital only channel and is served up in the Sports Tier or something like that. I think it runs about $7/month for the package which includes FSC, GolTV, NBATV, NFL network, and a bunch of college sports stations. I really enjoy my FSC and GolTV as I can watch European soccer basically all day on Saturday and Sunday. I highly recommend it. Anyway, that is my mostly off topic 2 cents.

Edit: Comcast's web site is a flaming piece of worthless junk so the best way to get a question answered is to call Comcast and hopefully talk to a knowledgable sales rep...

That's true to some extent. But you have to remember that LCFC is a very different animal - we have unlimited subs (in & out) so conditioning is not as much of an issue. That's one reason Peter & I don't focus specifically on conditioning in LCFC practices.

At higher levels though, running "just to run" is absolutely key to conditioning. No amount of drills can do for your fitness what running can do. Or as my coach in college said, "soccer is a good way to get in shape. But running is better."

The Trib article just sounds like a bunch of whining. Waaah! They want their money back! Is there any reason to believe that any of the eight million they contributed will be allocated to South Towne Expo? The article uses a straight percentage (10%) to assume such (8/80=.1 and 18*.1 equals "roughly 2 million") but that's not enough to convince me.

Another thing, I am truly surprised that D.C. hasn't made it abundantly clear that beer will be sold at the SSS. I'm not a drinker, but even I can't see a reason not to sell alcohol. If Dave's concerned with behavior, efforts might actually best be focused in regulation rather than prohibition: regulate the times it can be sold, make prices rather steep, etc. The fact is that people are going to drink regardless of sales availability. The reasonable thing is to try to regulate consumption and take a cut of the action!

Missed piece from yesterday:

Just thought I'd add this. It looks like it missed the cut for the thread yesterday.

i don't believe this to be true. I recently started training again to get inshape for soccer and hopefully try out for the weber mens team this coming summer. My initial thought was just to run. I was doing 2.5miles every evening and wasn't feeling too bad afterwards... however ask me to sprint from the halfway line of a pitch to the penalty area to defend an attack 3-4 times in 10 minutes and i would be dead for the rest of the game ... running distance is a lot different to the short bursts of speed you need within a soccer game. Playing outside with my kids gives me a better workout .. because it is a lot more like that of a soccer game ... short sprints, going to ground getting up again, quick turns etc ...

I didn't see much of it most of the season though.

When I heard Checketts make the comment about hiring a strength and conditioning coach, my first thought was: "We don't have a strength and conditioning coach?"

What professional sports team doesn't conditioning expert?

I guess that would be RSL.

At least they recognize the problem at the top.

Now.

Could be fun to see who really wants to play.

Should be a motivator.

Get PT'ing guys, you're on the clock.

My guess is that when Checketts was asked about beer at the new stadium, they probably just asked what his opinion of the previous week's LDS General Conference was. 🙂
