why isn't cabrera playing?

read his own words.

http://guatefutbol.com/content/view/935/2/

“Apparently it is something personal, I have realized that who runs the team is Jason Kreis, and he says to (coach Ellinger) who plays and who doesn't, because those who end up playing well are close to him,” said Cabrera directly.

Later on it says

When asked if the possibility of the team cutting him worries him, Gustavo said no. “It does not worry me, if it happens they must pay my contract until December.”

He also says that he has asked to be traded, to which they told him they would look into it, and it appreared a deal would be made with LA. LA was too deep in defense to take on his contract. Lastly he mentions that he is comfortble in the league but that he feels he has lots of options in other leagues if it came to that.

More or less the best translation i could do. I am a big guatemala guy but hearing something like that means hes locker room cancer, and a waste of an SI.

there is a great defensive player that is one of the stars for the costa rican team, SOLIS (i forget his first name), whos playing for CSD Communicaciones in Guatemala. Maybe we should go get him. Also seems like many teams are hitting a jackpot in argentina.

THanks.

I don't buy into the idea of him being lockerroom cancer. If that's the case why didn't RSL trade him in the summer? It could explain why he's not seeing the light of day with the first team right now. But it seems weird that this wouldn't have already been a problem last year.

I agree. But why was it not a problem when bringing him in last year and not a reason to trade him this summer but when the preseaon ends it becomes a problem? I know even good coaches make poor choices. But in the MLS with it's tight salary cap you have to cut your losses at some point sooner than later otherwise you hurt the team even more in the long run. That's salary and an SI that could be used on another player that is able ot meet the teams needs. I can understand keeping him around for when Pope is gone. But in playing lil' Novak at right full back and Fork at LB last night and Akwari plodding around trying deperately to look like a CB plus having Besagno and Brown on the bench with no Cabrerra, I think it's pretty clear they're not keeping him around as a backup.

I don't mean to imply all the problems are due to Carbrerra or that he can walk on water. But RSL was more than happy to clear out a lot players , even ones that hadn't been for a full season (e.g.Scarlett, Rojas, Gregario) why is Cabrerra around? Did they think they were going to be able to use him as trade bait with Sampson in LA?

Saying this crap in the press isn't going to help his cause.

Another revelation from this article: His nickname is 'Tavo.

It looks like he has asked his agent to find another team for him; even another league.

He is surprised that Ellinger is still around. "The Coach must have connections."

Well, to be honest, seeing as he's not even on the bench and we're starting a reserve team midfielder at right back, perhaps his cause isn't going to be helped by staying quiet either, which he has seemingly done thus far.

That said, in looking on the net, his agent is here: www.nationalsportsgroup.com.

Anyone want to contact them and see if they have any reflection on this?

"Tavo" isn't playing because he isn't earning it. He's played like Kreis or Novak stepped on his inhaler.

There are constantly calls between GM's in the league. Many agents also try to broker a deal. I wouldn't be surprised to see something done. The problem is that people are calling asking for Mehdi and offering Cabrera-like players.

Do I know something? No, but I've taked to Cabrera and his agent is using up a lot of minutes.

On a side note, would you have taken Martino for Mehdi a week ago?

Me either.

I don't know the ins and outs of contracts but I believe that at a certain point in the season all contracts become guarenteed... except for 2 exceptions. The team is allowed to name the exceptions. In '05 those 2 were Dipsy and everyone's favorite, O'Brien.

Would you be surprised if Gustavo makes that list?

Me either.

I don't understand what much of this means, can you try to explain this in less code language?

I say trade or cut Cabrera and use the then 2 empty SIs for someone that can help (or at least for depth).

Regardless of the reason, 'Tavo isn't going to play and its not helping anyone, especially RSL.

Here's a wacky idea:

Trade him straight up for Martin Machon. Machon is back in Guatemala, right?

Machon is about the same age as Pope & Kreis and can train Besagno to play D Mid.

Machon speaks English better than most Americans.
