What really gets me most about all of this is that there's an excellent article about soccer (here) that really should be read by everyone. It looks to me like whoever the sports editor is thought that "anti-soccer" should get equal time. Unfortunately, the writer the editor picked wasn't up to the challenge.

SO: If you write, be sure to praise Ali Williams' article--it's really a well-written piece. May her mission call be to Brazil. Or England. Not Alaska. (I hope I'm not slandering the PDL team in Anchorage by saying that. Is there a PDL team in Anchorage?)

I think my favorite part of the Barzidiot article is the part where he talks about return missionaries that are "born-agains" when it comes to soccer. Well, I can tell you one thing: my time in Argentina certainly cemented my soccer fanaticism deep within my soul, but I started playing when I was 5 and played at ungodly early morning hours while in my first year of college in Florida. I think Argentina just helped my fanaticism go from pupa/larvae to full-fledged adult bicho (bug).

I am now sick with the soccer bug 😉

In addition to all that, I never really had a chance to be a fanatic until Real got here. THANK YOU, UNCLE DAVE!!!

I remember that I didn't like the name Real Salt Lake when I first saw it on the internet poll, but as I sat there listening to Uncle Dave at the name unveiling at Rice Eccles, I heard him talk about a team that would be royal. I knew in that moment that I just had to accept the name and move on. By the time the banner was unveiled, I was in awe. I was going to be able to participate in something akin (ok, ok, not even close, but hey, it's all I've got!!!) to Boca vs. River. And boy, I knew who my new Boca was.

I even got a free t-shirt! :signrocko

Barzee is an ugly american. Pure and simple. Nice article by Ali, though. Good to see some balance. And Ali is right. Soccer is a way of life, pure and simple. It's a sport that touches those that play and those that watch in a different way than most "american sports". We as americans tend to sanitize and limit the effect our sports have on us because we don't want stampedes, crowd violence, kidnappings (Riquelme, and Fabrice Noel too), or some of the other less desirable effects that the "soccer is life" attitude can bring. I love soccer, though, and it is my sport.

!VIVA EL FUTBOL!
