I wonder if a radio station in, say, DC, would assign a novice and avowed baseball hater as the new Nationals play-by-play announcer. Hmmm. Don't think so.

Bingo.

True enough, Rover.

If it were up to me, I would put John Parkin & Fito Ovalle on the job. 2 guys who love soccer, and know a lot about it.

Many times, I would bring my Walkman into Area 51 and listen to 1020. In case there was a question about who got a yellow card, or who scored a goal; I would tell anyone who was interested. And in case a player had to leave due to injury, if Rolando El Veloz or Hipolito had an update on the player's condition, I would pass that along.

You're right, of course. I'm thinking like a fan who'll be watching RSL in San Diego via Direct Kick on the DISH from my well-padded couch. Radio wasn't part of my plans.

Radio was usually part of my plans when the Galaxy were on MLS Direct Kick/Shootout with Joe Tutino & Rick Davis.

I would mute the TV, then listen to the Spanish language audio over the Internet...........

I am now going to clarify the title of this thread...

Hatch once said on air... "I wouldn't watch a Major League Soccer game unless hell froze over. The Stingers are more major league than Major League soccer. Fox, your daughters softball team is closer to major league."

But, he will be our radio voice... like it or not.

Sounds like this is official.

Pastorino was on 1280 on my drive home this evening with Bolerjack and Monson, and officially announced the partnership between "The Zone" and RSL, even though the official press release on this hasn't happened yet.

And yes, Ryan Hatch will be the play-by-play announcer. He came in to the studio right after the call, and mentioned that he was trying to come up with a creative signature call for RSL goals, since "gooooooooooooal!!" has already been taken. They joked around (I hope) about perhaps yelling out some kind of food item after a goal, like "Chimichanga", or "Spaghetti". Hatch will be live from NY this Saturday during his regular show. Be scared. Be very scared.

Pastorino was asked about season ticket sales, which apparently are quickly approaching 4,000. Monson asked if a 15,000 average attendance number would really be obtainable with only 4 or 5 thousand season tickets sold, and Pastorino said "yes, definitely." Youth soccer teams should come out in droves, and they are going to market this to non-soccer fans or non-die-hards as "a fun, relaxing way to spend a nice summer evening in SLC."

He was asked about a stadium, and he said that discussions on that are on the backburner right now. Currently everyone's focus is getting ready for this season, but they have come up with 4 or 5 different possible ways of funding a stadium, but state legislators don't meet again until next year, so...

He talked about Mathis and Pope and how lucky we are to have them here in the state, and also mentioned Dipsy and Rojas as international players who are "stars in their own right." And he also mentioned Kreamalmeyer, saying he'll "probably be the first player off the bench" and that he has already earned the nickname "Laser Luke." Needless to say, I was thrilled to hear "Laser" get some well-deserved pub on the radio.

Right after Hatch left, and right before cutting to commercials:
Monson: "Wait a minute....does Hatch even know anything about soccer?"
Bolerjack: "Ummm...no."

Hopefully this works.

Good report Bordy. My whole deal is this: Not only does Hatch know nothing about soccer, but he has actively campaigned AGAINST soccer his whole life. Everyone knows who the biggest soccer hater is, and it's Hatch!

It's a little disconcerting.

Now I know very little about Hatch. But it sounds to me that his hero is Jim Rome (who bashes soccer every chance he gets)...probably has an 8x10 glossy of Romie that he kisses every night. Right?

Well, he might appreciate Rome and might pattern his radio style after Jimmy, but I'm afraid the only hero that Ryan Hatch has is Ryan Hatch. He just loooooves to hear himself talk.
