I concur.

My Final word

So today I dropped in and payed Mr. S a visit... things went well and it was agreed that things weren't handled the best on either side of this issue.

Basic Recap of What we discussed:

1. He was a bit flustered by the level of passion that soccer fans have. He said that it exceeds that of BYU/Utah rivalry. The difference is that the rivalry has been around for years, so it is a bit easier to get a handle on.

2. Mr. S tried to be a bit tounge in cheek, but that obviously failed. For that he feels responsible. He hopes that we all understand that he never intended to be offensive and actually reviewed his responses several times to try and avoid being offensive.

3. The DesNews has budget to travel to about half of the away games and give at least two reporters to every home game. DesNews management feels that they have given us quite a bit based on faith considering the history of failed (true they weren't Major League, but failed none the less) soccer clubs. As RSL establishes a track record for atendance and such the current commitment will be reassesed. Currently they have RSL on keel with college basketball as far as level of coverage.

4. If we want better coverage we need butts in seats and good TV ratings. We just need to show them that this is truely big time.

5. Please be a bit patient with the way they write soccer. They still have to cater to the general public and as a result some of what is written will not use the soccer speak that many of us are used to.

6. Please don't get to upset come september... for several months RSL will be the game in town. However, when college football gets rolling the sports page will be crowded with football and soccer. There will be tough decisions made and coverage will be somewhat scaled back out of necessity. They only have so much space... right now they have RSL to fill it with in the fall, they will have to put more content in the same amount of space.

That being said Mr. S said he visited this site and feels pretty sure that the most reprehensible e-mail did not come from people here. He also said that as long as e-mail is even tempered he will do his best to help people understand why and what the paper is doing. He also explained some of the issues that are facing upper managment at the paper... suffice it to say he is our best resource when we want to understand the sports coverage.
