I'm not sure of exactly what MLS procedures would be in a case like this, but the key in soccer is this phrase:

"In the opinion of the referee. . ."

In other words, calls are not reversed once made on the field. Additional fines may be added (like what happened to Mathis after the LA game), but penalties are not taken away.

I'd hope their would be a mechanism in place to throw out the one match ban in a case like this, but I doubt MLS will do that.

That's too bad. When you have incontrovertible evidence that things didn't happen like it may have appeared on the field, it's too bad that something can't be done. But I can understand them not wanting to second-guess the refs.

It's just really too bad that EJ is the one that is the bad guy in the whole thing, and he has even admitted that, and our Eddie will be watching the game from the sidelines. There just doesn't seem to be any justice in that. I would hope that when the league has a chance to fix such a blatant misjustice that they would. I don't think they will, but it would be nice.

Trust me--justice will be done, one way or another. With his bragging he's alerted every ref in MLS to what he did and how he showed up one of their fellow officials. He may have gotten some slack before, but not anymore.

Upon further reflection, and reading the BS forum that was linked to earlier. I got 2 things to say.
1) I have returned to big soccer for the first time in almost a year to read the boards and I HATE THEM TOO. (Im full of hate today). The FCDallas fans are as full of it as a Monty Python Wheelbarrow (Holy Grail reference for those who may miss it). Cant stand to read their drivel.

2) If as they all say the card was pulled instantly, I say no problem in letting it stand. (I havent seen any more replays, but it seems to be the consensus). It may not ever be called, but a tackle from behind is a red card offense. The key is seeing if it will be called when Chris Brown, or Phil McCRevasse or anyone who is not this seasons new darling gets marginally touched from behind. If so Im happy.

3) I guess that I think EJ ought to get a fine or a post match yellow. If Clint can get a $1000 fine a week later because his foul looked kind of violent, EJ should get one because he faked (which is against the rules also). Its a hard card to give (you never can tell is someone is truly faking) unless they friggin admit it. Maybe it will be the only one ever given, and players will never admit to anyting again, but it would be just.

4) Ive been at work for nigh on 6 hours now and havent done a thing. except read every soccer site I know.

I agree. It wasn't even a bad call, according to the "rules", IMO. But, like you said, where's the consistency? It's similar to a NBA ref calling traveling in the final minutes of a game. You know it's never going to be called...so why now?

Just a bad break, I guess. Like someone else mentioned, though, it might somewhat balance out that non-red on Mathis in LA.

We have a Rusty Pierce that I am sure won't take kindly to EJ next time we play... :D

I don't know if you guys read it, but Pope was pretty angry when he was interviewed after the game. Hearing Pope call out a ref and tell him he doesn't have any right to be a ref with his calls was amazing. Pope seems always so cool.

Imagine Pope and Dempsey on the same team?

I am already working on my sign for the FC Dive team when they come to RES June 4th. My new favorite quote is now in my signature...

I was thinking a sign that reads something like...

"Welcome to the RSL Fish Fry"

for next time we play Dallas.

Eddie Pope remains the "true" professional. Johnson should take note!
Quote:
In the aftermath, Johnson reportedly called Pope to apologize for the incident.

"It's water under the bridge now," said Pope when asked about the phone call. "That's just between me and him."

Pope is now suspended for the visit of the San Jose Earthquakes to Rice-Eccles Stadium this weekend.

"It's part of the game. Players make mistakes during the game, referees make mistakes," said Pope. "Unfortunately for me, it's a pretty big mistake, and I have to sit out because of it."
