Better ratings would be nice to help get these on regular, old school TV. Heck, even just ESPN (not the ocho) would be nice.

USA 2
Mexico 0 You can count on the U.S. to beat Mexico when it matters most. That's now 7 wins out of the last 10. Another 2-0 win--just like in Jeonju. But never underestimate the inability of some to recognize what is clear to everyone else. Case in point--Mexican National coach Ricardo Lavolpe. When asked to describe the USA team after the game: "The U.S. is a small team," he said. "They play like my sister, my aunt and my grandmother." Maybe he should have included his sister, his aunt, and his grandmother on his roster since the team he put on the field in Columbus just got whupped by two goals to none. In the end, I choose to ignore how our anthem is booed or how the strength of the USMNT is never acknowledged. It just doesn't matter. Regardless of what anyone else thinks, we keep producing better athletes and better teams every year. They can call us whatever they want to call us. If they need to find us, we'll be in Germany next June and July. __________________ Easy to be hard; hard to be smart. --Old Gunny Last edited by Rover : 09-04-2005 at 02:52 AM.

To be fair--and that's not easy--the comments were translated and since I'm not fluent in Spanish I'm getting it from news reports. I do know that part of the context was his opinion that since soccer is not the #1 sport here, Arena can start anyone and nobody will question it while every move Lavolpe makes is scrutinized in Mexico. Maybe someone asked him about why Palencia isn't on the team. I watched the GolTV broadcast of Super Stadium last week, where the hosts interviewed Lavolpe and Borghetti, among others. The overwhelming impression was of condescension and arrogance from coaches and players about the US team. For whatever reason, they have trouble with reality. __________________

I read the quote in Spanish and you are right Rover. It was kinda out of context. Part of what he was saying was that there were many people in the USA that did not even know there was a game. So in that respect the USA team was a small team and could play like his female relatives...ie no one cares if they play well or not. But I think there was some looking down on the US and it seems a lot of frustration at what he has to deal with in Mexico with the pressure and with Hugo.
