That's Comedy Gold; reading in the Deseret News about how tax subsidies should not be used for private business.

At least RSL's stadium will generate big increases in sales tax revenue from the beer that the Riot Squad buys and Posh Spice will generate some big money during her shopping sprees if she comes up when Beckham is here with the Galaxy.

Our tax money that we spent on the Tribune/Des News plant has generated nothing but big clouds of diesel smoke from their trucks.

Just a few random thoughts

My perception is that Dave and the team are getting more than frustrated with politicians. It seems to me that the team hasn’t had any siginificant support from anyone in government unless they greatly benefit from it and that once they aren’t getting any benefit, their support is promptly dropped. The first example of this was Rocky Anderson who once the team chose Sandy as a potential location last fall said that he was very unlikely to attend any RSL games there. Then we had Tom Dolan who after Tuesday’s vote whined about the anti-Sandy bias and declared the Sandy stadium “dead”. It doesn’t help of course having the city, county, legislature, etc, all in there banging heads against each other. I’m afraid that the team may have to do this whole thing with private funds if that is possible.

Dave claiming the LHM is behind the scenes influencing things can’t be a good thing. Unless he can produce some sort of proof showing officials receiving money or other compensation, most people in our community are going to view this as sour grapes and if Larry wanted to, he might have grounds for a slander suit. I have my reasons for not liking LHM but have to admit the public mostly likes him. Besides, as I’ve noted elsewhere, Larry isn’t the biggest obstacle, the biggest roadblocks to getting public dollars to help stadium funds are the media, and the majority of the county’s residents who are opposed to it.

And why do you think the media is against it? Seriously? They got a 10 million dollar hand out from WVC/SL County for a new printing facility...
So it is certainly not about an ethical stance...

Suppose for a second that you are the biggest sports guy in town with two sports venues, you have the biggest movie theatre and shopping complex in the valley. You have more car dealerships than IQ points...

You actually control what movies, sports teams and concerts people get to see....

Now wouldn't you need to advertise somewhere? maybe like in the only two newspapers in town?

Having all of those interests in one concentrated area... would make you an incredibly large advertising account at those papers would it not? maybe even the biggest...

So you want the media to form public opinion against soccer and RSL and the stadium...

What does one do to buy off the media?

Maybe you threaten to pull your advertising... not permanently of course, but for say two weeks or a month... can you imagine the money that the newspaper corporation would lose? You don't even have to actually do it... just threaten to do it and you will be having ceo's and business line managers wetting themselves...

So I ask you again... Why do you think the media is against it?

Who is RSL's biggest obstacle? I think you know him...

Follow the money!

Point of parliamentary procedure!

Another poster speculated that RSL's public relations department was a guy in a basement who worked part time with a dial up modem.

Dave Checketts looks to the casual soccer fan or the nonfan like a greedy, incompetent whiner who is out to hose over his fans and taxpayers.

You have to put a lot of effort into generating PR that bad.

I guess we really do have Major League Soccer here.

Dave Checketts seems to be as big a whiner as Mark Cuban, as incompetent as Donald Sterling or Marge Schott and as greedy as Al Davis.

It indeed could be that LHM is pulling strings with the media. With all of his different businesses (sports, movies, the Mayan, car lots) he likely spends a HELL of a lot of $$$$ in advertising. And I think it is hard to get to be as rich and powerful as LHM is without getting your hands a bit dirty at times. Certainly wouldn't be the first time in this country that a newspaper or TV/Radio station has been influenced in this way.

But without proof, it may be hard to get Joe Public to believe anything bad about "this guy".

You see that is where it is so beautiful... a threat has no paper trail... so no proof... the only way it would be taken seriously is if one of the newspaper execs came out and said that the paper was coerced... and we knbow that isn't going to happen...

Reading these articles is really pissing me off! I can't believe all the soccer-haters and accountants that have commanded the ear of the public on this one! It's so frustrating!!!!
