The 1998 Fire was MLS Cup. The 1998 Fusion made the playoffs. (I think they made the playoffs.) Neither of them was on a track to wipe the '99 Metrostars, the '01 Mutiny or the '03 Burn from the record books like we are.

If the team gives up and goes winless through May I will be all for wholesale changes. The team we have now should be able to beat Columbus at home and maybe even the CRapids. If we can't pull off wins against those teams at home then this has become a full on rebuilding year. New coach included. The Fire Expansion team joined MLS wjhen it was still in it's infancy. The league has gotten much better since then. It is unrealistic for a team to join the league now and expect to win a Cup.

In 1998 the Fire and the Fusion got to pick players from the existing teams... including the best players. Teams could not protect the top players. The last expansion draft the teams were able to protect there best players and so we got cast offs. In 98 the fire and fusion got to choose from the best in the league... in 2004 Real and Chivas got o pick from the bottom of the barrell.

I don't want to be the recipients of the "Relegation Boot" this year. We came damn close last year but thanks to the Metrostars beating Chivas on the last day of the regular season, we weren't. To salvage the season all we have to do is put two teams under us and we make the playoffs. A good run through the US Open Cup would be nice also. But we need leadership immediately to take advantage of this home stand we have comming up and to take advantage of teams that will be loosing more players than we are for the World Cup. What about an interim head coach?

After the '98 expansion draft, the Galaxy had to trade Jorge Campos & Chris Armas back for Danny Pena and Kevin Hartman. I'm pretty sure that players were able to protect their best players in '98. Otherwise, the Fire and the Fusion would have ended up with Cobi, Wynalda (well, Wynalda did play for the Fire and the Fusion eventually, but under different circumstances), Eddie Pope, John Harkes, Joe Max Moore, etc. Not Chris Armas, Ante Razov & Cle Kooiman.

Besides Bruce Arena, who apparently is busy at the moment. Who would we hire if Ellinger got the boot? Which MLS retread would we then be stuck with? Rongen, Ray Hudson. There isn't anybody out there besides the Bruce I would be all that excited about.

I just type the longest damn essay on why ellinger must go and it didn't let it post and now i am even more mad.
here is the jist of what i said. Reasons Ellinger must go: 1. He has never taught this team tactics. we suck tactically. this is not a player problem, all of our players are very talented. You can see how bad we are by watching how much better every other team in the MLS. Ellinger has not taught them movement on and off the ball. You can see it in the games, all of our players are lost and are just wingin' it the whole game. 2.Ellinger is too laid back. We were up 1-0 at home, with momentum and we gave it away. Where was Ellinger, sitting on the bench. ReAl should have been ripped into for giving away that game. The team is too laid back because ellinger is too laid back. 3. He is playing players in the wrong positions. If everyone else can see it why cant he. He is too nice to bench players for others who might not be as experience but who do a much better job all-around. 4. Kreis is carrying this team with his intensity and work rate. He shouldnt have to. A good coach would demand this from all of his players.
